![]() ![]() Legends mode lists every event that has happened in the randomly generated world you made and lets you just read the history of the world. There is one gamemode that I left out, though: legends mode. ![]() If you do want to try getting into it, I strongly suggest using a guide of sorts: the quickstart guide on the wiki is my personal favorite and what I used. ![]() The learning curve is a big time commitment and can be quite frustrating at times, bugs are rampant and many require intense workarounds, and it's also just not a genre for everybody. That said, Dwarf Fortress is not everybody's game. They have elaborate personalities with subtle effects on their mood and relationships with other dwarves, detailed physical traits that determine the exact extent of their capabilities, and needs that need to be met to keep them happy and focused, outside of the basic 'food booze room-to-sleep' necessities.įortress mode is quite daunting at first, but once you get past the notorious learning curve DF is remarkably easy from a gameplay standpoint (the UI never stops being clunky, you just get used to it), and even before that it is a very rewarding game to play because you can find great stories almost anywhere if you look close enough. Through a lot of intense micromanagement you can get pretty direct control over your dwarves should you absolutely need it, but there are limits to how much control you actually have dwarves are still their own people at the end of the day and you have to keep them happy and maintain all aspects of their lives. The indirect control is the biggest factor of how the game is played: dwarves each have labors, which tells them what they are allowed to do, and then you designate tasks like ordering an area to be mined, stuff to be constructed, or items to be crafted, and a dwarf with the appropriate labor will get to it. 4x4 is pretty big, though), starting with an embark party of 7, though you later receive migrants, can accept petitioners, and have births in your fort, up to around 200 or so, which is where even the best PCs will start to have trouble running the game at a playable speed (FPS is literally how fast time flows in-game, DF just runs the game as fast as it can up until the FPS cap, so small forts can go through an in-game year much faster in irl time than a big one). You indirectly control a group of dwarves that have set out to found a new fortress on your embark site (by default 4x4, but you can change the size if you want a bigger or smaller embark. Fortress mode is probably best called a strategy simulation game. The main attraction, however, is fortress mode. It's an interesting way to explore worlds, but it's difficult to have an immersive experience as an adventurer because of how grindy skill farming is and just how many bugs and unfinished features surround questing. That said, it's not a very well-flushed out gamemode, and is not nearly as popular as fort mode. ![]() So not doing anything causes no time to pass you get as much time to think about what you want to do before you do it. It operates on a frames system, in that all of your actions take some amount of frames and when you take an action, those frames pass for every other unit too. It is open-world in a completely randomly generated world of your making, but your sandbox capabilities are quite limited currently.
